The Ill Effects of The Standard Patio Furniture Cover Material
Patio furniture covers are manufactured to provide protection to the various furniture pieces that are placed by homeowners in the outer premises of their homes. These patio chairs, tables, loungers and so on can cost homeowners hundreds of dollars. It is only appropriate then that they are protected from the different weather conditions present in the outdoors that can cause damage upon them.
If you own outdoor patio furniture then you must have heard about the different types of patio furniture covers. One of the popular and standard materials used to make these furniture covers is vinyl. But, certain environmental and health issues have come up concerning this type of furniture cover material.
Vinyl is otherwise known as polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It is reported that the main components of this material can cause cancer. PVC’s main components which include vinyl chloride monomers are already assigned as known carcinogens while ethylene dichloride is considered a probable cancer-causing agent. Because of this, lots of areas which use PVC as a material have been closed up to avoid the environmental hazards.
Vinyl can also affect your health in another way. It is a non-breathable material so you would expect moisture to get trapped on its underside and on the outdoor furniture that it comes in contact to. Because of this, the trapped moisture can readily result as the breeding ground of molds and spores. When you unknowingly touch this side, it can cause skin allergies on your part, and worse, it can even affect your respiratory system.
If you use a full vinyl material, instead of protecting your furniture, this can actually speed up its destruction. As previously mentioned, moisture can get trapped inside because it can’t evaporate and breathe through the fabric. The moisture can then destroy the paint or finish of some resin furniture. It can cause wooden furniture to decay while metal ones will eventually develop some rust.
Knowing these ill effects of vinyl, you should therefore check the material of the patio furniture covers that you have or are about to buy.
